Phone the school and ask to speak to the teacher (9471 0300 from 8:15 am to 4:00 pm). If they are not available, then you may leave a message for them to contact you (clearly pronounce your name, phone number and leave a message).

EMAIL THE TEACHER

Ask your child if they know the email address of the teacher. Even if they do not know, they can log onto the high school web site via a home computer and find it out for you.

The email addresses of school staff are of the form:
<first name>.<surname>@education.wa.edu.au - John Smith's email address would typically be:

However, if there is more than one John Smith, it may be John.Smith3@education.wa.edu.au

When I am preparing submissions, I always keep in mind the words of Winston Churchill: Please be good enough to put your conclusions and recommendations on one sheet of paper in the very beginning of your report, so I can even consider reading it. Swimming and Water Safety - The 9 Stages
This form gives you the 9 stages of swimming competancy (as defined by the Department of Education). This is the stage that should be put in the consent form for water-based activities.

What parking is available at the school?

Within the school there are only 6 visitor bays (at the Woodsome Street entrance). The other bays are for staff and if you park in them you may be blocked in. So, if the visitor bays are full, please use the street parking and enjoy the few extra metres walk :<)

Almost without saying, it is good practice to avoid visiting the school at the peak drop-off (8:00 to 8:45) and pick-up times (2:45 to 3:30).

What about heavy backpacks? Why are there no lockers at school?

Long topic that is raised annually as new parents come into the school. There is frustration on the part of parents and the school is more words that actions. Since 2007, they have been saying we are tranistioning from hard copy to soft copy. However, our kids still have to lug around their books (which are unbelievably still not supplied digitally) as well as the extra load of their computers. The addition of year 7 to the high school has only exacerbated the issue. The standard response from the school is In the 2005 re-building of the school, there was no provision made for lockers and there is now insufficient space for lockers. The responsiblity is thrust back on to the students to repack their bags daily to minimise weight. And the issues still persist with no satisfactory resolution. No lockers, no reduction in the weight of the school bags.

Is there organised Debating (or not)? How can Parents help?

STUDENT PARTICIPATION:

Debating is an extra curricular activity for years 8 to 12 students. Teams of 3-5 students take part in the inter-schools' debating competition run by the West Australian Debating League (W.A.D.L. - www.wadl.org.au/).

Teams are broken up into three year groups - year 8, years 9/10 Juniors and years 11/12 Seniors. The school pays the bulk of the registration fees but students have to contribute $10. Depending on team numbers, each member takes part in 3-5 debates but students should be present at all 5 debates if possible. The debates are usually held at Perth College on Tuesday or Wednesday nights from 6.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. Jobs such as time keeper and chairperson are carried out by students. If the team is successful in winning the 5 debates or is the highest points winner in their division, then they are divisional champions and are required for up to another 5 debates in a knock-out competition which leads to the prize of State Finalist Champions for their year group. The foyer of the Administration building reflects the scope of previous year successes in the competition and many of the students find their way into leadership positions in the school.

The United Nations Mock General Assembly competition
Numerous public speaking competitions such as the Plain English Speaking Awards, Rotary Young Speakers and a special Northbridge Rotary Challenge debate for year 11/12 students.

PARENT PARTICIPATION

Teams need coaches and year groups need co-ordinators. Parents may fill those roles or assist teachers in providing feedback and coaching. To get more information contact Middle School teacher Warren Daniel.

Bus drivers are also keenly sought as transport is one of the biggest problems for after school sport.

What is the Boundary (Area) of the MLSHS intake?

Previous Boundary (2016): As an indication, the school's intake area covers the Mount Lawley, the Perth CBD, East Perth, Highgate, Northbridge, North Perth, Leederville, West Leederville, Mount Hawthorn, Coolbinia, Menora, Inglewood (up to Central Ave) and Maylands. Some of these (south-eastern) intake areas are shared with Churchlands Senior High School.

STATE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT IN JUNE 2017

Following the State Government's announcement of a new local intake secondary school in Subiaco, the local intake area for our school has been amended. Our amended local intake area will come into effect in 2020 when Inner City College (planning name) in Subiaco opens.

All children enrolled at our school in 2019 will be able to complete their schooling here. They will not have to change schools.

Additionally, if you lived in our school's previous local intake area before the 2020 enrollment cut-off, you will have the choice to enrol your children at Mount Lawley Senior High School or your new local intake school.
